What is Bluff Trivia?

An obscure question appears and everyone writes a plausible fake answer. All the fakes are shuffled in with the real one, and the room votes on which is genuine.

You score for finding the truth and for every colleague your invention fooled — so knowing nothing about the question is no barrier at all, provided you can write convincingly.

Example questions

Questions are obscure enough that almost nobody knows them, which is the point — you invent a plausible answer and try to fool the room:

  • A “murmuration” is the collective noun for a group of which birds? — Starlings
  • The dot over a lowercase “i” or “j” is called a what? — A tittle
  • What is the only food that never spoils? — Honey
  • What is the plastic tip at the end of a shoelace called? — An aglet

When to run Bluff Trivia

A team where the same two people always win at trivia

Knowing the answer is worth points, but so is fooling your colleagues — so the person who knows nothing about starlings and writes convincingly can win the whole round.

Writers, marketers, and anyone who enjoys being plausible

The skill being measured is writing something that sounds like it came from an encyclopedia. It is a genuinely different competence from recall.

Rooms of four to twenty-five

Every player contributes a decoy, so a large room produces too many options to read through. Around ten is the sweet spot.

Bluff Trivia questions

Do players need an account or a download?

No. Only the host needs a Fun Friday account. Everyone else joins from any browser with a 6-character room code and a display name — no app, no install, no IT ticket.

What if someone accidentally writes the real answer?

Answers matching the truth are detected and credited rather than shown as a decoy, so getting it right by accident never costs you.
